Gift Planning

Planned Giving

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth offers a full range of charitable gift planning services that allow individuals to support UMass Dartmouth, and in some cases receive a stream of income in the process. Gift planning options include gift annuities, charitable trusts, life insurance options, bequests and many other types of opportunities. This support for UMass Dartmouth plays an integral role in providing an affordable quality education to students and offer the best resources possible. Help us plan for the future of UMass Dartmouth with your legacy gift.

Gifts Through Retirement Plans

Leaving UMass Dartmouth as the beneficiary of your retirement plan is a great way to make a gift. Retirement plans that remain in your estate are often subject to both estate and income taxes when left to your heirs. In large estates the effective tax rate on a retirement plan may exceed 55 percent, leaving little for your heirs.

Designating UMass Dartmouth as the beneficiary of your IRA, Keogh, tax-sheltered annuity, or qualified pension or profit-sharing allows the assets to pass directly to UMass Dartmouth at your death without subjecting it to any income or estate taxes.

If you wish to make this type of gift, ask your plan administrator for a change of beneficiary form and use the following language:

University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Foundation for the benefit of UMass Dartmouth (you may also include a specific purpose such as a scholarship, or specific research program or area of care).

Charitable Gift Annuities

When you establish a gift annuity with cash or securities, you make a gift in exchange for UMass' agreement to pay one or two annuitants a fixed income for life. You receive a partial income tax reduction in the year of the gift, which may be carried forward for up to five years. Payments to the annuitants - which begin immediately - are made quarterly for life, and are backed by all assets from the UMass Foundation. A portion of the payments may be tax-free.

When the last annuitant passes away, UMass Dartmouth uses the remaining funds for the purpose that you specify at the time of the gift.

Deferred Gift Annuities

This can be an attractive option for donors as young as age 50 who may wish to supplement future income. Payments begin at a future date and you receive:

-A fixed income for live
-A partial income tax deduction in the year the gift is made, and
-An opportunity to defer capital gains tax.

Charitable Remainder Trusts

Yet anther gift offering a lifelong income stream and significant tax benefits, charitable remainder trusts can be arranged for gifts of $100,000 or more.

Benefits Include:

-Support for UMass Dartmouth
-Income to the donor or a beneficiary for a term of years or for life
-Favorable capital gains treatment on appreciated assets
-Charitable income tax deduction (for a portion of the value) in the year of the gift
